Why Is My Tooth Sensitive to Cold?

There are a number of things that can cause a tooth to become sensitive to cold. Some causes include: excessively hard tooth brushing (best to use a soft or extra-soft toothbrush); gum disease – especially if it’s been a while since your last cleaning; thin, worn tooth enamel – especially when eating acidic foods; excessive use of mouth rinses; a cracked tooth; a recently-treated tooth; decay around edges of fillings or crowns; clenching or grinding your teeth while sleeping; and, of course, a dying nerve.

Regardless of the cause – if you’re feeling pain, then your body is trying to tell you something isn’t right. It’s best to have your tooth checked by a dentist. My office offers free consultations, so you can find out what’s wrong, how to fix it, and how much it might cost you (with or without help from dental insurance).

Don’t ignore it. Dental problems only worsen with time.  If you have a dental question, then please send it to me and I’ll do my best to answer it for you.
